There are countless debates around whether the members of Gen Z prefer movies or series. While both types of films have their own pros, the answer is obvious if one considers the current trends and preferences in the field. To put it simply, at present, series are more popular than ever.
The reason is quite simple. As Gen Zers are very busy nowadays, it’s difficult to find two hours for the entire film at once. In contrast, 30-45 minute episodes of The Bear, Shogun, Baby Reindeer and other fascinating shows viewed during meals and commuting are just perfect.
In addition, the viewers tend to develop an attachment to the characters of their favorite series that would be impossible to achieve through movies. Instead of a quick watch, Gen Z prefers an interactive process of exploring plots on Reddit, making TikTok clips, discussing every single episode with their friends on Discord.
You would think that the short attention span of viewers generated by TikTok and Reels would render long series a failure. However, quite contrary to popular belief, long series generate something called “compartmentalized dopamine.” At the end of every 40-minute episode, you experience a fantastic dopamine hit from your favorite show, making it impossible not to watch “just one more.”
So does this mean that movies no longer matter to the youth of today? Not necessarily, yet the bar to make a film worthwhile is much higher. Take the popularity of “Barbenheimer,” or even Dune: Part Two. Gen Z is willing to commit to a movie, but the film must be an event of a lifetime; something visually stunning that cannot go unanalyzed. As for a regular movie? They’ll gladly wait for a 60-second TikTok synopsis.
Ultimately, for Gen Z, a series is a lifestyle, while a movie is an event.
