Difficulties during a trip do not usually happen once you have reached your destination; rather, they occur a few days prior to your trip when you make some minor mistakes which might appear insignificant at the time. These may include failing to examine your passport thoroughly, getting your bank card blocked in a foreign country or ignoring an important health requirement. No matter whether you are driving from one city to another or taking a domestic or international flight, time is always less than what you think.
1. BE MORE THOROUGH WITH CHECKING YOUR PAPERS THAN YOU BELIEVE YOU SHOULD BE
For domestic air and train trips, a photo ID card issued by the government is usually enough. Since May 2025, US domestic flights have enforced the need to present a Real ID compliant identification. Regular state driver’s license is not considered sufficient for entry into federal airports anymore.
For traveling abroad, there is more to the validity of your passport than its expiry date. Six month rule applies here: your passport should still be valid six months after your point of entry. Not your exit, but your point of entry. Traveling with an expired in three months passport and having a reservation is definitely not a matter to be sorted out at the gate.Visa requirements will depend on your citizenship and the country of your entry. Consult the official immigration website, not the third-party websites with visa information.
2. ORGANIZE TRAVEL INSURANCE BEFORE YOU GO, NOT WHEN AN EMERGENCY HAPPENS
With a short domestic car trip, your current medical and car insurance will cover most circumstances well enough. With any international journey or whenever you have already prepaid your flights and lodgings, travel insurance is there to fill the gaps that your current insurance does not cover.Medevac from abroad with no insurance may cost anywhere from forty thousand to two hundred thousand dollars, depending on the circumstances and place of origin of the emergency. Current domestic medical insurance does not normally apply outside the country. Trip cancellation insurance takes care of the money you have prepaid for your trip whenever a documented emergency interferes.
One in six international travelers claims insurance during their journeys. None of them expected to be among those at the time of skipping it.
3. BOOK YOUR ACCOMMODATION BEFORE YOU HIT THE ROAD
For international travelers, this is not only an issue of comfort but one of security since the immigration officials frequently ask travelers about their place of accommodation. Lacking such an arrangement and being unable to show it via your mobile phone will make you subject to further questions and will complicate your process of passing the border point.
As for road trip within the country, the lack of booking while arriving in a strange city after a whole day of driving and during the holidays will force you to find anything available, and usually in a less desirable area and for a higher price.
4. GET YOUR FINANCES READY FOR A LOCATION WHERE NOBODY KNOWS YOU
Unfamiliar locations where your payments happen trigger a potential fraud alert. Getting your card blocked in a foreign city is not an error. On the contrary, it works like intended – but at a time when it is completely wrong for you. Contact your bank two to three days prior to departure by calling them or using their app. Inform them about the dates of your journey and your destination location.
If you travel abroad, don’t use airports to exchange currencies. Usually, the exchange rate in airports is 10-15% lower compared to the one in ATMs in your destination location. Take some money of the local currency just to pay for arrival expenses and withdraw everything that you need after arrival in the city.Take at least two cards of different systems. One card provider shouldn’t deprive you of access to your money.
5. HEALTH PREPARATION FOR TRAVELING ABROAD FOLLOWS A TIMELINE
Some health-related preparations should not be left to the last week prior to traveling abroad. Vaccination against yellow fever is mandatory for many African and South American countries, not optional. It takes time to get vaccinated and obtain the corresponding certificate, and some appointments for travel vaccinations have to be booked in advance.
Consult only the travel health advice pages provided by your government, and not regular travel information pages.
Take all prescription drugs in their original packaging and pack with a letter from your doctor describing the drug and the illness it is used to treat. Some medicines that may be legal in your own country are restricted in others. It would be undesirable to sort out such issues in the customs area while waiting for an early morning flight without any paperwork.
6. LUGGAGE REQUIREMENTS VARY DEPENDING ON YOUR MODE OF TRANSPORT
On airplanes, portable charger and electronic equipment carrying lithium batteries need to be carried in hand luggage. They do not have to be checked into the hold. This is a universal aviation regulation that applies to all airlines regardless of battery size. Non-compliance will require unpacking or giving up the item at check-in.
Hand luggage must carry liquid items not exceeding 100 millilitres per container and kept in a clear re-sealable plastic bag of no more than one litre volume. The checked luggage allowance for economy class passengers traveling on international flights usually ranges from 23kg. Paying the overweight cost at check-in counter is always higher than when paying extra baggage charges online. In road transport, heavy items packed in the higher position of the back portion of the vehicle unbalance the vehicle’s center of gravity in a way that is felt while driving on motorways.
7. PLAN CONNECTIVITY BEFORE YOU LACK IT
Internet access cannot be taken for granted when venturing into unfamiliar territories. Make sure to download offline maps prior to the start of the journey. Many map applications including Google Maps allow offline navigation without any internet access.
Any smartphone released since 2020 supports the use of eSIM which means you will be able to buy an international data plan for your destination online before arriving at your point of arrival. In addition, it tends to be cheaper and quicker compared to roaming and using SIM cards from a vendor.
Prior to your departure make sure to inform someone about your entire itinerary: accommodation addresses, route if traveling by car, and times of arrival at each point along the way. In case anything happens, this information will prove extremely useful.
None of those steps requires much time: the passport check takes a minute; informing the bank will take one message; downloading a map – thirty seconds. But there is one thing they have in common – they give you an opportunity that closes before departure.
